Kirk Hampson - artist statement

Much of what one collects through life is experience, or for me, skills. Yet I believe that experience, those skills, are not truly yours until you've shared them, which is the mindset that allows me to create in such a way that the art is not really mine to begin with, but belongs to the viewer.

Growing up in Small-Town, Canada, travelling the world, and raising two great sons has really inspired my collective experience to break free in the last few years and increase the pace of my creating. I feel I am only a small piece in the complex puzzle of my art. Research, development and experimentation have always been very important to the way I sculpt. Mistakes are the best way to find great new beginnings.

Realistically speaking, I have always wanted to be surrounded by art. I include lights in my sculpture for esthetic value, believing the interaction of light to create shadow enhances the viewing; I fill entire rooms with warmth using the medium of paint, showering them with various other pieces of sculpture and art. My idea is not just to create a piece of art but an environment.

If anyone asks, I am currently evolving.
